Week 19 Report: DLS win over Edenfield means 1s near safety

30 Aug 2023

The 1st XI made it back-to-back victories to move to just one win away from sealing safety from relegation, in a very tight Championship, sitting in 5th position.

Bury were asked to bat first after an initial delay to get the ground fit for play, and were bowled out for 139 with 10 balls of their 42 overs remaining. Only two batsmen reached double figures, but Nasir (41) and Jno Lewis (50) made sizeable contributions as both continued their late season form to get the home side upto a competitive total.

With the ball, Nasir took the early key wicket of Paul Gallagher, before Alex Breckin removed Edenfield’s overseas pro Dhanushka Dhamasiri first ball – his second first ball duck against Bury this season. A 4th wicket partnership between Edward Taylor (33) and Harry Fallon (17) took the visitors above the DLS par score as rain began to fall around the 20 over mark, but the wicket of the latter, off the bowling of Ali Naizi, put Bury back on top. A short rain delay halted preceedings and reduced the Edenfield target to 123 from 35 overs. Alex Breckin struck with 3 wickets in 4 balls in the 33rd over as he ripped through the lower order, before Nasir returned to take the final wicket – Edenfield falling 21 short of their target.
