Week 6 Report: Double cup success for 1s over Bank Holiday Weekend

31 May 2023

The 1st XI posted 2 wins from 3 over the weekend, with another impressive T20 victory, and progression to the 2nd round of the 1st XI Championship Cup.

The Bullsharks made it 3 wins from 3 on Friday night, with a second win over Premier 2 opposition, beating the Heywood Monkeys by 44 runs. Kershaski Jno Lewis was the star man with the bat for the Bullsharks, his 81* from number three came from 60 deliveries and included 13 fours, with Bury posting a very competitive 171-5 at Radcliffe Road. A number of key wickets at key times meant Bury could manage the second innings, despite a strong powerplay from Heywood. Sam Nolan-Massey and Ali Niazi both took 3 wickets in their 4 over spells – the Monkeys finishing on 127-8. (Scorecard)

On Saturday, league struggles with the bat continued as GMCL Championship leaders Royton bowled out Bury for 142. Each of the top 6 got into double figures, but failed to convert into significant rules – Dom Morris top scoring with 42. Two early Mukhtar Nasir wickets reduced Royton to 14-2, but 30+ each for Liam Brown and Jack Fawcett led the home side home by 5 wickets. (Scorecard)

On Sunday, the 1st XI bounced back to seal progression to the second round of the 1st XI Championship Cup. Nasir (37), Jno Lewis (39), Morris (41*) and Nolan-Massey (31) contributed to Bury’s 226-7, before Ali Niazi (4/34) and Mohammed Jehangir (3/24) did the damage with the ball as South West Manchester were bowled out for 163. The next round takes place on 11th June, with a trip to Werneth in the diary. (Scorecard)

In the other games, Bury Storm pushed a strong Prestwich Patriots side all the way on Thursday in the 2nd XI T20 competition, with the visitors passing the winning line with 2 balls remaining. At the weekend, the 2nd XI fell to defeat against high-flying Walshaw, whilst the 3rd XI bowled out Woodbank for 83 on their way to their first league victory of the season – Murtaza Ali was the star performer with 5/7.
