Report: 2s secure promotion and Division 4S&W title

8 Sep 2021

With a 5 wicket win at home to Westleigh on Saturday, the 2nd XI were confirmed as Division 4S&W champions, whilst it was an opportunity missed for the 1st XI at Walshaw.

Westleigh won the toss and elected to bat first at Radcliffe Road, but lost early wickets, with Mohammed Majid heavily involved in the action - taking 4 wickets in his 14 over spell and a catch. Opener Sean Makinson was ran out by Joe Spencer, the first of two run outs for him, and the visitors slumped to 57/9. However,  number 10 Ellis Whittle took the attack to Bury, scoring 32 from just 16 balls, and pushed the score upto 83 before Patrick Potts bowled him with his first and only ball of the afternoon.

Bury were quickly under no illusions that it would be an easy run chase, slipping to 9-4 within the first 4 overs. However, leading run scorer Syed Hashmi(49*) and Sohale Khan (19) steadied the ship and brought Bury home, securing promotion to Division 3 and also being confirmed as league champions. (Scorecard)

The 1st XI missed the opportunity to put themselves in a very strong position in the Premier 2 promotion battle, with a 8 wicket defeat at Walshaw. Bury fought well on a tough wicket to reach 191 - with sizeable contributions from Ammar Baig (54), Mukhtar Nasir (48) and Dom Morris (47). It was a strong start with the ball too, with Walshaw at 27/2 in the 11th over - but from that point dropped catches proved to be costly, with Adam Stansfield (91*) and Saif Bhojani (79*) staying in the middle to the end, to take 6 points for Walshaw. They followed that victory with a 2 wicket win at Edgworth on Sunday, meaning Bury need to get 6 points against Woodhouses, who need points in the relegation battle, and hope that Walshaw get 0 points against already-relegated Royton for Bury to be promoted on the final day.
