Report: 1sts end season with win to finish 4th, 2nds collect league title

15 Sep 2021

The first eleven ended their season with a 23 run victory at Radcliffe Road - not enough for promotion on the day but secures a fine 4th place finish in a very competitive Premier 2 division.

As was the theme for most of the season, Gary Garner won the toss, and he elected to bat first. Mukhtar Nasir (63) and Ben Gorton (45) put on 114 for the second wicket after an early first wicket for Woodhouses. 3 quick wickets for the visitors brought them into the game, before Alex Breckin batted throughout the last 14 overs for 36* from 28 balls to push Bury upto 186/6 from their 50 overs.

Breckin then starred with the ball early on, with both openers bowled inside the first 7 overs, with just 2 runs on the board. George Mills, making his first team debut, then claimed the wickets of key men Nick Hardman (33) and Matthew Taylor (28). However, Woodhouses continued to grow in the game, and spells of slow bowling from Ammar Baig and Gary Garner kept the scoring quiet - captain Garner taking 3/22 in 6 overs, before Alex Breckin had the final say of the season - taking his 4th wicket of the afternoon, as Woodhouses, who were relegated on the day due to results elsewhere, fell to a 23 run defeat. Bury finish in 4th place, with Walshaw taking the final promotion spot. (Scorecard)

The 2nd XI travelled to Golborne - who were relying on results elsewhere to have a chance of joining Bury in being promoted. With 15 overs to go, Golborne, batting first, were 115/4 despite familiar-looking figures from Matt Metcalfe's opening spell of 10-5-13-3 . Two wickets in an over for Mohammed Usman (2/34) began to turn the tide, and Uzair Fraz took 3/5 in 3 overs as Golborne collapsed to 134 all out.

Bury struggled with the bat, with Zain Khan the only one to get settled at the crease. He batted through the innings for 67*, with the most support coming from Marcus Eaton (13). Bury fell just 6 short of victory, being bowled out with 14 balls of their 45 overs remaining. Nevertheless, Bury finished top of Division 4S&W ahead of Swinton Moorside who also are promoted in 2nd, just ahead of Golborne in 3rd. (Scorecard)
