Week 3 Report: Bullsharks beat Brox before successful Saturday

10 May 2023

It was a winning double for the 1st XI squad in week 3, with the T20 campaign getting off to a flyer on Friday before we took the points in a rain affected game at Winton on Saturday.

The rain threatened to wipe out the opening T20, however it thankfully subsided, allowing time for a 16 over-a-side game to commence. The Bullsharks batted first and recorded 97-9 from their 16, with cameos from Kershaski Jno Lewis (20 from 10 balls) and Ali Niazi (25). The wickets in the second innings were shared around, with 4 bowlers taking 2 each in their 3 over spells, as the Barging Bears were tamed, finishing on 81-9. (Scorecard)

On Saturday, Bury once again batted first, away to Winton in the GMCL Championship. Zain Khan (21) maintained his early season consistency at the top of the order, before the in-form Jno Lewis and Niazi put on 49 for the third wicket before the latter was caught for 31 in the 41st over with the score at 132-3. Jno Lewis went on to pass 50 for the first time in a Bury shirt, before a brief rain break reduced the Bury innings to 47 overs. The man from Dominica pushed his total upto 71 before he was bowled - Bury finishing their overs on 181-6 with Duckworth-Lewis-Stern revising the target to 189 for Winton to chase.

An early wicket apiece for Mukhtar Nasir and Jno Lewis put the home side on the backfoot, however a fourth wicket partnership worth 56* between Keyur Patel and Praharsh Parikh kept them fighting, reaching 86-3 when drinks were taken after 22 overs. During the drinks interval, the rain began to come down harder, and was eventually enough to call time on the game - Winton were 3 short of the DLS par score, meaning Bury came away with the 5 points. Meanwhile, on Thursday, Bury Storm had a strong display with the bat in their first T20 away at Milnrow, scoring 115-8, but heavy rain in the interval meant that game was abandoned. On Saturday, Woodbank 2s were the victors at Radcliffe Road by 6 wickets, whilst on Sunday, the 3rd XI came out narrowly on the wrong end of a 2 wicket result, the highlight being Talha Latif's maiden senior five-fer (6-1-15-5) as Bury came close to defending their 110-8.
